55 Million Years Ago

55 Million Years Ago is a multidimensional visitor experience including an interactive Fossil Museum, Art Gallery, Fossil Gift Shop, Visitor Information Centre and Workshop Area surrounding a central Ancient Garden. The museum is unique as the land surrounding Murgon is the only area in Australia to date, that contains fossils of mammals from between 70 and 25 million years ago – bridging a large gap in the fossil record that had puzzled palaeontologists for decades and giving the attraction its unusual name. The perfect stop for travellers on their way to somewhere else to drop in and discover Murgon's secrets - ancient and everlasting.

75 Mile Beach

National Parks and Reserves

75 Mile Beach

It is not hard to guess how this location got its name. Being 75 miles long, there are plenty of spots to stop and go fishing! Look for deep holes and gutters along the beach that have clear water and some foam on the surface from waves breaking over the sandbar behind. Holes where fish can escape to deeper water are best. Beach fishing is a year-round activity on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) but from August to October, the famous Tailor Run sees fishing enthusiasts come from far and wide to experience the battle between man and tailor fish. Apart from its length, there are many more impressive things about this rugged stretch of sand on the east coast of Fraser Island. It's where you'll find the Maheno shipwreck, the popular swimming spot known as Champagne Pools and the striking volcanic rock formation of Indian Head. The beach itself is not a safe place to swim due to dangerous currents and a large shark population. It's also a landing strip for light aircraft so be sure to take care when you are cruising along the sand in your four-wheel drive. Also, watch for small streams or washes across the beach highway.

A Place to Create, A Place to Create, A Place that Matters

Created in 2023, A Place to Create, A Place to Share, A Place that Matters is a striking flood recovery mural by local artist Gala Jane, inspired by the resilience and spirit of the Northern Rivers community. Developed through community consultation and recovery workshops, the mural captures the three key elements that emerged from those conversations — Safe Space, Community, and Sharing. The thoughtful colour palette symbolises Ballina's identity and connection to place: Orange monochrome – representing the famous Big Prawn Blue monochrome – representing where the sea and sky meet Orange and blue together – representing the meeting of place, culture, arts, and people This powerful mural stands as a testament to creativity and connection in the face of adversity, reflecting the ongoing journey of healing and renewal after the 2022 floods. Gala Jane is a Northern Rivers mixed-media artist whose work uses text, textiles, and found objects to explore women's safety, mental health, and community resilience. A graduate of Southern Cross University, her murals and installations appear throughout the region. After losing her studio and artworks in the 2022 Lismore floods, Gala's practice now deeply examines trauma, recovery, and hope through art.

A Special Place For Jimmy James

Jimmy James (the second) was a famous Aboriginal tracker, who belonged to the Pitjantatjara people. Jimmy moved to the Riverland in the 1940's and took his name from his (equally famous father-in-law, tracker, Jimmy James). Just a short stroll from the Berri Visitor Centre, this living riverbank memorial honours Jimmy, who was able to 'read the bush like a newspaper'. He worked with South Australian police on many investigations, murders, robberies and disappearances, his most famous was with Daniel Moodoo, another talented tracker, in 1966 where they travelled from Berri to find a nine year old missing girl in the Adelaide Hills, which they did successfully. The monument is sculpted out of two large slabs of black granite which are finely polished and engraved with images of birds and animals- all part of Jimmy's spirit world.
