The Hindmarsh River Walking Trail

The Hindmarsh River Walking Trail takes in a coastal lagoon, rare paperbarks, rive red gums and beautiful scenery with abundant birdlife. There are five stages to this walk, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours; you can spread it over more than one outing or make it a full day. Remember to bring good walking shoes, suitable clothing, and take drinking water. In summer there may be snakes. There is an excellent Walking Guide available from the Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre. The walk starts where the trail crosses the SteamRanger railway line near the Hindmarsh Bridge. You can park in the turning circle in Bridge Terrace. Go down stairs from the railway line, then downstream to the wetlands, paperbarks and beach. Or, after the stairs cross under Hindmarsh Road through the subway to take the riverside track upstream through redgums, and enjoy the birdlife and scenery. The Lagoon Trail is from Hindmarsh Road to the beach, say 30 minutes. For some, this is enough. The more serious walkers enjoy the Paperbark Trail, a loop crossing the school footbridge; allow 30 minutes to an hour. The Waggon Trail is on the north side of the river, an alternative to the Wattle Trail on the south bank. Each is an hour along the river. The McCraken Trail is an hour return, to the McCracken Playground.

Victor Harbor Causeways

Landmarks and Buildings

Granite Island Causeway

The Causeway connects the South Australian City of Victor Harbor with Granite Island, a Conservation Park with free entry. The Causeway is known for its historical connections to whaling when Victor Harbor was a Port, the means of transporting goods to and from sailing ships berthed at the Screwpile Jetty built in 1878, the Horse-drawn Tram that commenced in 1894 and takes passengers on a return trip daily, the Little Penguin colony and the Island's scenic beauty. Construction began as a jetty for shipping in 1862 and reached 640 feet (metres). It was extended to the island in 1875 with a final length of 2,073 feet (632 metres). A horse tram to carry freight moving through the Port of Victor Harbor was in use by 1894. By the end of the 20th century the timber Causeway was in a poor state of repair, and in February 2021 construction of a new concrete and steel causeway was begun adjacent to the original. The project was completed on time and on budget and the new Causeway opened on 22 December 2021. As you cross the new Causeway, you see etched into the deck a series of indigenous artwork pieces, linked to represent the connection between Dreaming stories and all of their characters in nature. The Ngarrindjeri-Ramindjeri etchings invite a spiritual journey walking on country across the Causeway.

Coral Street Art Space

The Coral Street Art Space is located in a state heritage-listed building at 10 Coral Street, Victor Harbor. The building was opened in 1878 as 'The Institute'. In 1935 it was taken over by the Town Council and services the local community as a library for over 80 years. Most recently, the building played host to the RSL Victor Harbor branch until 2019. The Coral Street Art Space came to life in 2019 and offers a new home for art and culture in Victor Harbor. The City of Victor Harbor established the space in response to the communities desire for a multi-purpose space that could incorporate all art forms. Community and Council wanted to ensure that Ngarrindjeri / Ramindjeri cultural practices featured heavily in the space and that a Ngarrindjeri / Ramindjeri name was given to the space. Representatives from MIPAAC (Miwi-inyeri Pelepi-ambi Aboriginal Corporation) were involved in this conversation and Aunty Phyllis Williams took suggestions to the local Ngarrindjeri language group. They offered Tumbi Tjil-urmi Titi (Living Arts Centre) as a potential name, which was confirmed by Mary-Anne Gale, Research Associate for Adelaide University's Linguistics Department, would be the same for Ramindjeri.
