A local SEO checklist for small businesses

Use this practical local SEO checklist to help nearby customers find, understand and contact your business across search, maps and local directories.

Local search works best when every public signal tells the same clear story about your business. You do not need to master every technical SEO tactic. Start by making your name, location, offer and next step accurate wherever a nearby customer may look.

Work through this checklist one section at a time, then repeat the review every three months or whenever your hours, services or contact details change.

Confirm the essentials

  • Use one consistent business name rather than adding promotional keywords.
  • Publish the correct address or service area, phone number and opening hours.
  • Choose the most specific category that describes the main thing you do.
  • Link to the page that best helps a customer take the next step.

Check these details on your website, Google Business Profile, Find What's On profile and the local directories that already show your business. Correct important mismatches first.

Build one useful page for each main service

A single homepage cannot answer every question. If you offer distinct services, create a clear page for each important one. Explain who it is for, what is included, where it is available, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to enquire.

Write naturally. A page about children's pottery classes in Mackay should answer the questions a parent would ask; it should not repeat that phrase in every paragraph.

Make location genuinely useful

Include the suburb, town or service area where it helps someone decide. Add arrival instructions, nearby landmarks, parking, accessibility and travel notes when relevant. These details are more valuable than a list of surrounding suburbs copied into the footer.

Earn and respond to reviews

Ask real customers for an honest review after a completed visit or service. Make the request simple and never offer a reward for positive wording. Respond to useful feedback calmly, without publishing private customer information.

Publish current local activity

Events, workshops, seasonal menus and community partnerships show that the business is active. Give each confirmed event a complete page with a date, place, image and direct action. Update or remove expired information so customers do not land on a dead end.

Check the customer journey

  1. Search for your business name and main service on a phone.
  2. Open the public result without signing in.
  3. Check whether the location, hours and offer are immediately clear.
  4. Tap the call, directions, booking or enquiry action.
  5. Fix the first point that feels confusing or slow.

Local SEO is ongoing housekeeping, not a one-day trick. Accurate information, useful pages and a reliable customer journey create a stronger foundation than chasing every new ranking tip.

Create or update your Find What's On business profile to give local customers another accurate place to discover what you offer.
